In about 250 Km to the north is Parc National des Volcanoes that share the 300 of the 700 remaining population of the Gorillas with Mgahinga of Uganda and the Virunga of DR Congo, the park has ten habituated Gorilla families allowing only a maximum of eight guests. Other additional activities include a hike to the Karisoke volcano, tracking the golden monkeys, visiting Diana Fessey Karisoke Research centre. It is interesting to note that Park is part of continuum with other wildlife areas that collectively form Virunga Conservation Area with vivid three extinct volcanoes; Mgahinga 3474 m, Sabinyo 3674 m and Muhavura 4127 m.
DAY 1: Arrival – Volcano NP
On arrival, you will be met by our staff at Kanombe Airport in Kigali; he will help you with your luggage to the car and drive to Ruhengeri / Kinigi Hotel three hour drive away from Kigali, driving across the rolling hills that are synonymous with Rwanda landscape. After check in to your hotel, your guide will brief you about Rwanda, your travel itinerary and gorilla tracking rules and all what you require.
DAY 2: Gorilla tracking
After your early morning breakfast, with packed lunch, go for registration at the park offices and be ready for briefing at 7:00 am. Walk up the steep densely forested hills before coming across the Gorillas camouflaged in the forest vegetation. This trek requires a reasonable degree of fitness as well as a sturdy pair of walking shoes. Sit in the forest among the Gorillas listening to them grumble to each other and marvel at the sheer size of the dominant male. It is amazing to think that there only 700 individuals of these beautiful creatures left in the world.
DAY 3: Golden Monkeys / Karisoke
After breakfast with packed lunch visit the Diana Fasie grave, an American lady who was studying Gorillas in this park but was unluckily killed and buried in this camp. You may track the golden monkeys, rare and endemic to the Virunga. In the evening visit the Batwa, the original inhabitants of the area; come back early enough to leisure around as you wait for Dinner.
DAY 4: City tour and fly out
After breakfast drive to Kigali; visit the Genocide memorial, the crafts market before settling down for lunch and leisure around before transferring to the airport for your departure.
